Saturday May 27th: Volunteers Needed at Hibou

We would love to know if you can meet us for Trail Clipping and Shoreline Cleanup.

Meet us at 9:30am at the first parking lot after the Hibou Entrance when you are coming from Owen Sound … where the Meaford water station is located.

Bring work gloves and clippers if you have them, water, hat, sun screen and “bug stuff” may be useful too.   Although just showing up is fine, it would be helpful if you let us know if you are coming.  Email us at friendsofhibou@rogers.com or marieknapp@rogers.com.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Saturday May 27: Trail Clipping New Date

Postponed Trail Clipping that was scheduled for Tuesday May 9th. We will plan to do it on Saturday morning May 27 and combine it with the shoreline cleanup.

Due to the excessive wet in the wet land area we decided to postpone the Trail Clipping that was scheduled for Tuesday May 9th.  We will plan to do it on Saturday morning May 27 and combine it with the shoreline cleanup.

Bring work gloves and clippers if you have them, water, hat, sun screen and “bug stuff” may be helpful too.   It would be helpful if you let us know if you are coming.  But just showing up is fine too.  Hopefully the sun will be shining.

April 2017: Successful Beach Clean-up In spite of Rain

What an industrious group of 16 volunteers working together to make the beach a great swimming spot for families and visitors!  The wall of wood debris we were faced with as we began our work felt rather insurmountable but we didn’t let that stop us.  Wheel barrows and pitchforks came in very handy given the depth of the debris at the water’s edge.  In fact we could have used more pitch forks but the surplus of rakes gave others the job of pulling together the smaller piles into larger ones that could be lifted into wheel barrows.  Let the pictures tell the tale.

Thank you to everyone for your gift of time and effort.  This is a good example of how the Friends of Hibou work. Friends helping friends.

The picture shows the piles of debris now ready to be moved away from the shore by GSCA staff.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers!

A big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who pounded nails on Wednesday morning so we could complete the boardwalk building. We now have 39 eight-foot boardwalk pieces stored in the garage ready for the GSCA to place in specific spots on the Hibou trails. It was a great work morning.

Reminder: We Need Your Help Nov. 9th

We still have about 15 boardwalks to nail together. As before, the boards are all precut so we can work in teams of three to get them done. If we have 10 to 12 people we would be done by noon. Can you come at 9 am on Wednesday, Nov. 9th to the beach parking lot by the garage? Please bring a hammer and ear protection if you have them. If rain or snow, we will meet Thursday Nov. 10th instead.

Please send your response to rmknapp@yahoo.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank You Volunteers

IMG_2637Dear Volunteers,

We are so grateful for your assistance with this project!

IMG_2635Thanks to about 15 volunteers who came together May 17th, the Hibou Beach area is once again improved.  Mounds of sawdust and wood debris was left behind in Georgian Bay from a sawmill that apparently was operational in the Paynters Bay area many years ago.

It is definitely not all gone.  This is the second year that volunteers gathered to use rakes, pitch forks and wheelbarrows to move the debris back and away from the shore.  Staff from the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority then take responsibility for its removal using a tractor and lift.IMG_2632

This was the second volunteer day.  Earlier in May volunteers came together to do trail clipping.  Sometime in the summer, we will ask from more volunteers to join us in building more Boardwalks for installation on the wetland trails.

IMG_2633On this website,  there is a place where you can insert your email address.  Once validated through email, you will receive an email whenever anyone writes a blog.  If you are not already signed up, that would be the best way to learn about other volunteer opportunities and news about Hibou.

Maybe we will see you out on the trails or at the beach or along the Hibou shoreline soon.

Thank you again for your help.
